These unusual shells came from a friend’s collection. As a boy he lived along the coast of South Carolina and he has an impressive collection of shells. He tells me that a lot of the shells he has can’t be found anymore as certain species have gone extinct. While extinction is a natural phenomenon, striking 1 to 5 species a year, scientist now believe we are losing up to 10,000 times that rate due to human activities. Habitat loss, introduction of non-native species and global warming all interact to effect this rate. Stressing our ecosystems is not good for species survival and biodiversity.
